A HEART AFTER GOD: THE LIFE OF DAVID

Word Encounter and Power Service (Wednesday, 20th May 2026)

Text: 1 Samuel 16:31

Ministering: Pastor Johnson

The life of David

1. David was a shepherd.

=> Shepherds are caring and can do anything to secure the lives of their flocks.

2. David was a musician.

=> This was one of the skills that sold him out to Saul.

3. David was a warrior.

=> He fought many battles but never lost any.

4. David was a psalmist.

5. David was a king.

6. David was a leader.

Lessons from the life of David

1. God looks at the heart, and not the appearance.

=> David was not a hypocrite. God knew the kind of heart and values that David possessed.

2. Faith in God brings victory.

=> David never attributed any of his victories to himself. In every war he fought, he always acknowledged the sovereignty of God (1 Samuel 17:37-47).

3. Humility is essential for greatness.

=> 1 Samuel 18:14 – David was very humble, even in his victories.

4. Learn to wait for God’s timing.

=> He respected authority. Even though Saul attempted to kill him many times, he never jumped the gun and took matters into his hands.

5. David was a worshipper and prayer warrior.

=> Worship and prayers sustain spiritual life. Psalms 63.

6. Sin has its own consequences. 2 Samuel 11&12.

=> Let’s be conscious of our actions today. God can forgive us, but the consequences remain.

Things to note

1. God is after our values, characters, and spiritual qualities, not just how we look.

2. Most times, people pay so much attention to the outward appearance.

3. God is not just interested in our titles; He is interested in the qualities of our lives.

4. Regardless of what challenges you experience, put God first.

5. Learn to build on past victories and trust God to also do more for you.

6. Testimonies are results of the challenges we overcame.

7. Some victories are not meant to be rubbed on people’s faces.

8. Reaction is the product of pride; responding is the product of humility. James 4:6.

9. True worship is not how good the music is. It is the presence of God and how connected you are to God.

9. Worship is an act of communicating with God. It is a way to strengthen our relationship with God.

10. Let’s endeavour to build our prayer life, intimacy, and worship life with God.
